Many of its inhabitants work in the tourism sector as camel drivers or owners of numerous papyrus galleries and oriental bazaars. The village is characterized by large, closely-knit families, with clans bearing names such as Khattab, El-Gabri, El-Shaar, Fayed, and El-Komati.
