The Grand Egyptian Museum is a museum like no other, where cutting-edge technology and unmatched artifact collections are beside the Pyramids of Giza. Unlike traditional museums, GEM offers a complete cultural campus with interactive 3D exhibitions, a children's museum, panoramic pyramid views, and the world's largest display of Tutankhamun's treasures.

In this article, we will dive deep into this cultural hub's galleries, grand halls, and its unmatched Virtual Exhibits. When is the official opening scheduled? And how Sun Pyramids Tours approaches it with our dear travelers on daily tours

When is the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) Opening

The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) was originally set to fully open on July 6, 2025, with a soft launch planned for July 3. But as of mid-June, officials announced the opening has been pushed back to the fourth quarter of 2025. There’s no exact date yet, but it’s in the works.

That said, you can still visit now! The museum has already opened 12 out of its 14 main galleries, including the impressive Grand Hall, the sweeping Grand Staircase, plus shops, restaurants, and even a kids’ museum.

However, the biggest highlights—like the full Tutankhamun galleries and the Solar Boat Museum—will stay closed until the official grand opening later this year.

Staff are currently preparing for a huge international inauguration, working closely with diplomatic and cultural partners to make it a truly global event.

While the museum is partially open at these times:

The Grand Egyptian Museum spans 500,000 m² on a plateau just 2 km from the Giza Pyramids, offering panoramic views and a cohesive design that unites multiple exhibition halls, conservation labs, a Grand Atrium, and landscaped public spaces.

While the museum is partially open, the official opening, including the Tutankhamun galleries and Khufu's Solar Boat Museum, is expected in the last quarter of 2025.

• Grand Staircase & Atrium

As the architectural centerpiece of the GEM, the Grand Staircase is more than a passage—it is a ceremonial procession through history. Flanked by towering statues of pharaohs and monumental artifacts, the staircase draws visitors up from the atrium to the core galleries, creating a physical and symbolic climb through Egypt's dynasties.

The glass walls offer panoramic views of the Giza Pyramids, bridging the ancient past with the modern museum experience.

It also serves as an orientation space, connecting the museum's wings and providing an awe-inspiring introduction to the collections ahead.

• Middle Kingdom & Ptolemaic Collections

Organized and displayed in a narrative timeline order, these galleries present a sweeping journey through two transformative periods of Egyptian history. The Middle Kingdom halls highlight advances in sculpture, literature, and temple architecture.

The Ptolemaic section contrasts with a fusion of Egyptian tradition and Greek influence, offering insight into Alexandria's cosmopolitan rise, bilingual inscriptions, and religious evolution.

Together, these collections span over 1,500 years of Egyptian civilization, providing context for the artistic and cultural shifts across eras.

Specialized Spaces

Specialized Spaces

• Conservation Center

The museum's conservation labs are among the most advanced in the world, equipped to handle the careful restoration of fragile mummies, textiles, papyri, and wooden artifacts.

What sets this center apart is its transparency—visitors can peer through viewing windows to watch conservators at work, offering a rare, behind-the-scenes look at how ancient history is preserved.

Interactive digital panels explain the science and techniques used, making the conservation journey just as fascinating as the exhibition itself.

• Children’s Museum

Far from a traditional gallery, this dedicated space invites young explorers into the world of ancient Egypt through tactile exhibits, interactive digital games, and 3D learning environments.

Kids can "dig" for archaeological treasures, piece together ancient puzzles, and learn hieroglyphics through fun, tech-enhanced storytelling.

Designed to inspire curiosity and make learning fun, the museum also offers family-friendly tours and educational workshops, making it an ideal space for a new generation of Egypt lovers.

• Lecture Halls & AR Venues

Blending education with entertainment, the museum's lecture halls and AR-enhanced venues serve as platforms for immersive learning.

From live talks by archaeologists and Egyptologists to augmented reality reconstructions of ancient temples and tombs, these spaces allow history to unfold in real-time.

Visitors can attend screenings, join workshops, or explore holographic recreations of long-lost sites, creating a dynamic bridge between ancient wonders and cutting-edge technology.
